Who are the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome?
Formed in 2011, the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome is made up of users and HHV enthusiasts. Our overall purpose is ensure that Herne Hill Velodrome remains a much loved venue for present and future generations of cyclists. In order to achieve this aim we perform 4 highly important functions.
1. We raise funds in support of the Herne Hill Velodrome Trust, the charity set up to secure the future of Herne Hill Velodrome following the Save the Velodrome campaign. Relaying the track was stage one. The junior-track, MUGA (multi-use games area) and lights were stage two. Stage three is the New Pavilion. Planning permission for that was granted just a few weeks ago, the money is there (courtesy of the Marathon Trust, Sport England, Southwark Council and the Mayor’s Fund) and the hope is to start building in Autumn this year. So with a little luck it’ll ready to open in the Summer of 2016, 125 years since Herne Hill Velodrome was first built. But the fundraising goes on; the Friends are now raising cash for the essential bits and bobs needed to kit out what will surely be the World’s greatest velodrome pavilion.
2. To keep the Herne Hill Velodrome Trust in touch with users of the site and the users of the site in touch with the Trust.
To this end a Friends Trustee is elected every year who attends the Trust’s monthly meetings and reports back to the Friends. It’s currently VCL’s Phil Wright but once the pavilion is built and the Trust takes over managing the site the plan is to have more people representing ‘Velodrome Users’ on the Board of Trustees.
3. To bring all the various Velodrome user-groups together.
This is essential; for the place to survive we all need to work together. The Friends Management Committee meets every month and contains representatives of the diverse mix of organisations that use Herne Hill. VCL, Herne Hill Youth, Crystal Palace Tri, Wheels for Wellbeing, Dulwich Paragon, local residents, they’re all there!
4. To provide a committed volunteer force for the Velodrome.
Countless people have given their time for free to Herne Hill over the years. The Friends aim to support volunteers and boost their numbers. We currently have around 500 members, we’d like to make that 1000. It’s just £10 a year to join the Friends so that would give us £10,000 a year towards Herne Hill Velodrome’s future. That future is close to being secure. The new pavilion will clinch it. Be a part of this cycling success story.
We have two membership tiers, so why not join us!
Our new tier or ‘Special Friend of HHV‘ is £30 a year (+£1 p+p for your unique ‘Special Friends’ membership card to be sent to you). Alongside the aforementioned warm feeling and Track League registration, you also get discounts at a host of local and London-wide businesses, from coffee and bike shops through to beer and bread. Navigate to our ‘Membership Affiliates’ by clicking here or via the drop down menu to see all the businesses that are involved, what they’re offering to Special Friends and links to their websites. It really is a fantastic scheme and worth the extra few bob, which all goes straight back to the track.
Our standard membership or ‘Friend of HHV’ is only £15, with all proceeds going directly to the track. This also allows you to race at our summer Track Leagues and provides a warm feeling inside, knowing you’re supporting the track and all who enjoy it.
Alternatively, you can simply make a one-off donation for any amount you like, from £1 to £1m, to the Friends of HHV and help the track to continue to develop, prosper and support a wide range of users. To do so, please follow the link below.
