What FHHV Do?
Contrary to what the name Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome might suggest we're not a lot of WI types that just go around baking cakes, trimming hedges and picking up litter. We are in fact cyclists acting for cyclists in an effort to try and galvanise the ground swell of support that arose during the Save the Velodrome campaign. Although baking, hedge trimming and litter picking is an important part of what we do, to achieve all of our goals the FHHV committee is also required to think imaginatively in order to create inspirational events, products and projects.
The FHHV committee has 3 clear objectives:
- Strengthen the connection between the HHV Trust (the charity created by the Save the Velodrome campaign) and all the Velodrome users
- Help raise funds for HHV Trust
- Provide an enthusiastic volunteer force for HHV
Having only been established in November 2011 FHHV have achieved a tremendous amount in a very short space of time. The FHHV Committee go about achieving its objectives in a number of ways outlined below;
FHHV look to create a variety of events that target all the users of the HHV with the emphasis being on fun. Once everyone is enjoying themselves the funds soon follow. Working closely with local schools, Dulwich Picture Gallery and everyone's favourite roller racers Rollapaluza, FHHV's first event Going for Gold
proved incredibly successful. We moved onto stage the most popular South East Track Championships
in recent memory. In 2013 we plan to follow these up with our Spring Opener Party in London's Canary Wharf and The Team Championships
in July. We have plenty more exciting projects in the pipe line.
FHHV volunteers have also manned stands at numerous cycle trade shows – where our HHC scalectrix has proved very successful at grabbing people's attention.
A vital part of any event organised by the FHHV committee we are always seeking to source products to be raffled and auctioned at FHHV events.
Working with quality cycling brands such as Miltag and Condor, FHHV have created a fantastic range of merchandise. FHHV's tops, bottles and caps have proved incredibly popular. These products have helped raise awareness of the need to secure HHV's long term future and continue to generate vital funds for that cause.
FHHV volunteers are involved behind the scenes making many of HHV's brilliant events happen. Both friendly and informed FFHV volunteers help spread the word about the vital work required to secure the long term future of our wonderful old velodrome.
The FHHV Committee is in regular contact with its database of fully signed up Friends via email and printed newsletter. Friends are kept informed of upcoming FHHV events and of the Trust's progress with both funding and planning applications.
