VC Londres, the club that manage Herne Hill Velodrome was set up with the aim of encouraging more youngsters to get into cycling and that philosophy is still very much in evidence. Our childrens' sessions and events are safe, affordable and cater for all abilities, giving all youngsters the opportunity to participate.
Kids love coming to Herne Hill Velodrome and we have plenty to offer them. They have the chance to get started, train and race in a safe and friendly environment. They have fun, make friends and get fit and healthy.
On the track we run novice sessions on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, for kids of eight or above, provided they can comfortably ride a bike. Older riders can also take part in race training on Monday evenings, Track League racing on Wednesday evenings and even Derny (motorbike) training for the very accomplished on Thursday evenings. Younger children can take their own bikes on the track for half an hour on Friday evenings, at no cost, just to get used to it.
See our session pathway guide for details of how to progress through all our youth sessions.
Herne Hill is also home to the UK’s only urban MTB course. Mountain bike sessions for boys and girls are run by Herne Hill Youth Cycling Club on Saturday mornings.
Children joining a club will also get the opportunity to take part in regional races, go on guided club rides, go on club trips to the UK and abroad and all sorts of other activities.
During the school holidays we run an affordable and very popular holiday club. Our experienced coaches are able to manage mixed age and ability groups, ensuring that everyone has fun and gets a good workout. This is a great introduction to cycling at the Velodrome and is suitable for children aged eight to 15.
Additionally, many of the local schools use Herne Hill Velodrome to offer their pupils a chance to experience track cycling or MTB. In 2012 we will catered for over 1000 during the summer term alone and after London 2012 there was a huge surge in demand. Our calendar fills up very quickly, so consider booking a private session early.
