VC Londres, the club that manage Herne Hill Velodrome, was set up with the aim of encouraging more youngsters to get into cycling and that philosophy is still very much in evidence. Our childrens' sessions and events are safe, affordable and cater for all abilities, giving all youngsters the opportunity to participate.
It's very easy to come and have a go, you do not need to book in advance for any of our regular public sessions (except the holiday club), just turn up 5 - 10 minutes before the session.
Children joining a club will also get the opportunity to take part in regional races, go on guided club rides, go on club trips to the UK and abroad and all sorts of other activities.
See below or our session pathway guide for more details of how to progress through all our youth sessions.
Youth Track Training (8 - 15 year olds)
We run novice sessions on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, for kids of eight or above, provided they can comfortably ride a bike. Older riders can also take part in race training on Monday evenings, Track League racing on Wednesday evenings and even Derny (motorbike) training for the very accomplished on Thursday evenings.
Frog-Bikes Cycling Sessions (4 - 8 year olds)
Herne Hill has teamed up with lightweight kids' bike brand, Frog Bikes, to give children aged between 4 and 8 the chance to participate in some special sessions on the 250m junior track on Saturday afternoons at 1pm. The hour-long sessions, which cost £3, will introduce youngsters to the basics of bike riding and will give them the opportunity to both develop and practice their general bike handling and cycling skills. Frog Bikes have kindly donated a fleet of their bikes for the young riders to use during the session, or alternatively they will be more than welcome to bring their own bike along to learn on.
From March 19th 2015, this session will also be at 5pm every Thursday. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for kids cycling, please drop us an email.
Strider Balance Bikes Sessions (2 - 5 year olds)
Thanks to Strider Bikes and our new flat 250m junior track and multi-use games area built as part of our Southwark Olympic Legacy Project we run Strider balance bike sessions on Tuesdays 9-10.30am. You can drop in anytime and don't have to stay for the whole session. The cost of the session is £3 and includes bike and helmet hire.
This is the perfect opportunity kids aged 2-5 to learn the balance and co-ordination skills before stepping up to a pedal bike. Riding on our 250m flat track with others will be fun too, and our coaches will be able to add in some games and races depending on the group.
We have 10 Strider bikes and helmets available and you are welcome to bring your own. Riders with their own pedal bikes are welcome too. At busy times we may have to take it turns on the bikes. Helmets must be worn at all times while cycling at Herne Hill Velodrome.
From March 20th 2015, we will run a Friday afternoon Strider Bikes and improvers session at 4-5:30pm. Kids of all ages who need space to practise and improve their skills are welcome to attend the Friday session. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for kids cycling, please drop us an email.
School Holiday Clubs (8 - 15 year olds)
We run school holiday sessions just about every day of the school holidays throughout the year. These are very popular, so you need to book in advance. For more information click here
Girls only Track Training (12 - 18 year olds)
While girls are welcome and encouraged to take part in all the youth sessions, we have also introduced a girls only session on Monday evenings at 6pm. This is particularly useful for the older girls, as it gives them a chance to train and practice racing against each other. Older and more experienced riders may also join the women's sessions on sunday afternoons. For more information on both click here
Mountain-Biking Sessions (6 - 16 year olds)
Herne Hill is also home to the UK’s only urban MTB course. Mountain bike sessions for boys and girls are run by Herne Hill Youth Cycling Club on Saturday mornings.
