Getting started
Due to the success of Team GB in recent years and all the publicity around the Olympics, track cycling is becoming more and more popular and this is really apparent to us. Herne Hill isn’t as steeply banked as many other velodromes, making it ideal for beginners to try it out. Before you get started, there are a few things you need to know.
The first time you come to Herne Hill Velodrome you will need to take part in an induction session. These will teach you all the basics of track riding. An induction is required even if you are a competent cyclist, as track riding involves etiquette and skills not found in other areas of cycling. See the Session Pathway page for details of where to start and how to progress.
All sessions (excluding the Tuesday Night Road Bike session) take place on fixed wheel track bikes. For your induction, we will provide you with a track bike which is included in the session cost. See the Bikes page for more details and the clothing page for advice on what to wear.
Please always sign-on, prior to collecting your bike, at the tables by the track gate by the home straight of the track.
