gcse track cycling
Discover the Olympic sport of Track Cycling in leafy Dulwich with our GCSE PE Track Cycling Programme — a fast-track course of expert coaching and performance assessment spread over two or three action-packed sessions held on our 450m outdoor track.
In the first session, students learn the fundamentals of riding a fixed-wheel track bike, including the art of smooth pedalling, group riding, and confident control on the banking. Sessions 2 and 3 turn up the speed, introducing individual bike-handling skills, time trials and full context race formats tailored to meet GCSE PE assessment criteria using OCR, AQA or Edexcel examination boards.
Our enthusiastic team will inspire students to embrace the excitement, discipline and strategy of this exciting sport: helping schools bring the individual sport element of the PE GCSE to life.
We provide all equipment and coaching and will provide our analysis of the students’ skills and performance to teachers in an easily-digestible format that aligns with your exam board requirements. Teachers are responsible for submitting their own assessment and recording the footage required for external moderation.
Designed for Schools. Built for Students.
Perfect for GCSE PE.
This introductory track cycling programme gives students a fun, fulfilling experience that directly supports the practical individual activity component of GCSE PE, perhaps even sparking a lifelong love for track cycling. Students should already be competent cyclists before enrolling in this programme and must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment and grading.
Students will be evaluated on key performance skills laid out in the exam board assessment criteria: e.g. starting, accelerating, maintaining speed and line, body position, observation, group riding, sprint finish and controlled stopping, as they develop technical precision and tactical awareness.
Each session builds upon the previous one: from isolated skill drills to competitive race scenarios, this programme challenges and excites in equal measure, offering a time-effective and memorable way to achieve GCSE success.
Testimonials:
I just wanted to pass on a massive thank you for the experience you gave to our boys. They really enjoyed and learnt a lot from the three sessions.
As a teacher of 11 years I have worked with many coaches and external organisations. The quality of the sessions, the planning and the communication with the students is some of the best I have seen. Please keep it up!

Herne Hill Velodrome is an established, historic venue, with an Olympic legacy. It’s now run by a small team of passionate cyclists and coaches who love introducing the sport of track cycling to new people.
Our GCSE PE programme has been developed by our team of experienced coaches. This experience includes: Managing Great Britain’s under 16 talent development team, a British Cycling coaches’ education tutor, and a pool of specialised youth development coaches experienced in devising and developing sessions and opportunities for young people. Our coaches have been involved in training riders who have gone on to become British Road and Track champions, Olympic medallists, and Tour de France racers!
We are always reflecting, evaluating and reviewing our course materials and session plans to ensure they accurately reflect the specific assessment criteria of each exam board. We also prioritise students getting as much riding time on the track during the time available, ensuring they come away with an experience that gives them the most enjoyment possible whilst also building real-world skills and showcasing their abilities.

The course runs over 6 hours total, usually delivered in 3 × 2 hour sessions. If your school is travelling further, we may be able to fit you into 2 × 3 hour sessions.
The course is designed for students who can already ride a bicycle confidently and unaided. If you have riders who are less confident, with enough notice we can help point them in the direction of learn to cycle sessions to get them to the standard required to participate in this course.
There’s a minimum group size of 10 students and a maximum group size of 15 students. If you have fewer students we may still be able to accommodate you but a minimum charge based on 10 students will apply.
The cost is £75 per student.
All necessary equipment is provided (bikes, helmets and gloves).
Our site is fully risk assessed, and all coaches have the relevant British Cycling qualifications, DBS checks, Safeguarding Training, and First Aid training.

We have a standardised assessment matrix based on the exam boards’ curriculum (OCR, AQA or Edexcel). Our coaches will make notes throughout assessment days and send a detailed document with summaries of our analysis of performance to help teachers prepare their submissions to the exam boards for moderation.
Teachers will be responsible for gathering the necessary footage to support these assessments.
We collate anonymous data and compare results from across our range of schools to ensure our assessments and scoring accurately reflect the experiences and performance of GCSE students trying track cycling for the first time.
