OFF-ROAD TRAILS

We have an extensive network of Cyclocross and Mountain Bike trails tucked away behind our main track, perfect for everything from a relaxed ride away from traffic, to racing in winter conditions. We’re working towards having a biodiverse, sustainable and all-weather trails network, with thanks to the Rapha Foundation and British Cycling’s Places to Ride.

We run a progressive pathway of sessions for both adults and youth riders. We focus on Cyclocross from May-December, and MTB from January-May.

Saturday mornings are run by Herne Hill Youth Cycling Club, for riders aged 6-18, who offer MTB sessions for beginners, improvers and advanced youth riders. These sessions run year-round.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Even though we’re not fortunate enough to be on the side of a mountain, HHV’s trails offer a great opportunity to learn the skills and bike handling needed to tackle bigger challenges. We’ve got portable ramps and jumps, which, when combined with some of the more technical sections of our trails, can provide a great practice opportunity for a whole range of experience levels.

Want to go shred some forest trails but not sure your bike handling skills are up to it? Come along to our MTB skills sessions, where you’ll get the opportunity to practice some of the more technical aspects of mountain biking without trekking all the way out of London.

Small group sizes and experienced coaches mean you’ll be able to get a good amount of contact time and really boost your confidence, whilst having fun at the same time.

In March and April come and enjoy some weekly Mountain Biking with sessions inside the velodrome concentrating on ramps, jumps and drops.

CYCLOCROSS

Come and learn the essential skills needed for this winter race-focused discipline. We run skills sessions for youth (6-14yrs), and adults (14+yrs). Suitable for confident cyclists of all abilities, Cyclocross is heaps of fun and can be ridden in all weathers.

YOUTH

Adult (14YRS+)

Our Youth Cyclocross Skills sessions are for riders aged 6-14yrs who want to develop their bike handling skills on a cyclocross-specific terrain and will cover core skills used in cyclocross such as climbing, descending, cornering, shouldering the bike, mounting, dismounting and more. Different sessions will cover different techniques, as well as include fun games and races.

Riders who are in the categories Youth A+B / Junior, who have Cyclocross racing experience can attend our British Cycling Cyclocross Development Centre, to push their cyclocross racing skills to the limit with new courses and drills every week.

Beginners should book ‘Adult Cyclocross Skills’ - we’ll cover core Cyclocross skills such as climbing, descending, cornering, shouldering the bike, mounting, dismounting, and more, to give you the confidence to participate in Cyclocross races, or just to have a fun, challenging session to stay fit amongst the leaves and the mud of our off-road trails.

Riders with more experience and confidence with essential Cyclocross skills can book ‘Adult Cyclocross Race Training’ - a more intense and advanced session where you can get some quality CX training in and hone your racing skills and techniques.

Women's CYCLOCROSS sessions

We run women’s Cyclocross sessions from May - December, which are designed to cover all the basics that you’ll need to be able to take part in a Cyclocross race, aimed at women who haven’t tried this dynamic discipline yet, or those who want to brush up on their skills and practice all the Cyclocross-specific bike handling techniques that will make any CX course a fun challenge. As you build your skills you’ll be able to push even harder, and build the fitness needed to be competitive in this challenging discipline!

Cyclocross or gravel bikes are preferred but you are very welcome to use a MTB too. We have MTB or CX bike hire available for an extra £4.

CYCLOCROSS racing

We host various off-road races, including rounds of the London and South East Cyclocross League, MAAP London Summercross Presented by Beastway, Thundercross, Octave New Year’s Day Madison Cyclocross, and the infamous Muddy Hell - this year hosted on Bonfire Night and sponsored by Rapha.
