Madison training and events at HHV in 2023

Madison track racing is not for the faint-hearted, but at HHV we have lots of opportunities to get stuck in and give the hand-holding race a go in 2023!

Madison suits lots of different riders as you can balance out any preference towards endurance or sprint with your partner. As Madison racing requires some fairly advanced skills and techniques we'd only recommend these sessions for riders in at least their 2nd season of racing, so that they already have a good level of experience racing in a bunch on the track.

If you’ve never raced Madison before, come to one of our Madison Basics sessions. If you’ve raced Madison or have attended a ’Basics’ session, come to as many training sessions as you can before you race it - don’t underestimate the complexity of this race.

Madison - basics & training

Mondays in June mean Madison! These will take place at the same time as Race Training sessions on Mondays from 7-9pm, and be open to anyone with a race accreditation, and ideally who is in at least their 2nd season of racing. The Madison Basics sessions will introduce new riders to the handsling technique at slow speed as well as the unique ways the bunch moves and pairs swap in and out. We’ll plan the sessions to also be useful for more experienced madison riders to improve their skills.

Madison Training sessions will then up the tempo and introduce more racing into the session. We recommend that you do one training session as well as Madison Basics if you are new to it, but the more Training sessions you can do, the more prepared you’ll be.

We’ll have two intro to Madison sessions and two Madison training sessions in June, followed by one Madison session every month from July - September on the first Monday of the month.

We particularly encourage women to come to these mixed sessions as there will be limited opportunity to practice this in women’s sessions before the Madison night at women’s league.

Our monthly Madison nights at track league offer lots of opportunities to give Madison a go. Teams must not have more than one A cat rider at any event, to help even out the competition. Both riders must have completed at least two training sessions if new to Madison this year. The mixed Madison night in September is a super fun event that, combined with our women’s night at track league, helps get lots more women competing in this race! This will be followed a few weeks later by the Madison night at the final round of Condor Women’s League, so get that practice in.

Brixton CC’s Super Madison is the highlight of the Madison calendar, with several Madison events throughout the day including: a 5 mile Scratch, Team Elimination, Team Win-out, and the Rob Jefferies Super Madison 50 Lap Points Race. This is definitely one to prepare for if you’re planning on taking part!
