We’re Hiring: Cafe Manager
Join our team 👇
We’ve got an exciting and unique opportunity to join the HHV team as Cafe Manager. The cafe is an important part of our facility; helping to bring our community together, give people a sense of belonging and friendship. We are looking to grow the hours of operation and revenue of the cafe, and use it to draw new people to the site and our community. The role gives the opportunity to lead a team of dedicated and supportive volunteers and contractors.
Jan’s Café, upstairs in the Pavilion, is named after Herne Hill legend Jan Slater. Together with her late husband George, Jan has been volunteering at the Velodrome since the 1960s, selflessly serving refreshments to riders and spectators for over 50 years. Jan might not be around quite as much anymore but her energy and high standard of refreshments remains.
The cafe is currently open on Saturdays from 9am - 2pm, around racing and other events on weekday evenings and at weekends as well as being run by volunteers immediately after busier sessions during the day on weekdays. We plan to introduce Sunday openings and increase the hours of operation midweek. The cafe manager would be expected to work one day each weekend and one or two evenings a week in the summer and be flexible around occasional larger weekend events.
We currently serve specialty coffees, pastries and hot breakfast rolls on Saturdays, and local craft beer, frites and other drinks and snacks for race events. The new Cafe Manager would have high levels of autonomy over menu development so they have a chance to really put their stamp on it.
We would encourage applications from anyone who feels they have the capabilities and drive to succeed in the role. We don’t expect candidates to have every skill or qualification from day one. We’re looking for someone with the right attitude, enthusiasm and potential, and we’re happy to support the learning and development needed to build the skills and experience required to succeed in the role.
The deadline for applications is 11pm on Sunday 27th September, we’re aiming to hold interviews in early November.
To apply please send your CV along with a covering letter (300-400 words) letting us know what excites you about the opportunity and why you're a good fit for the role to recruitment@hernehillvelodrome.com
